Penn State Continues to Climb in Key NSF Rankings
In the latest National Science Foundation rankings of total research expenditures in science and engineering, Penn State continued its climb, landing in 9th place among US research universities. Total research expenditures is considered a strong indication of relative excellence in engineering and science research. The rankings, which are based on recently released 2004 data, show Penn State overtaking Penn and Cornell to move into the top ten. FY2004 NSF Research Rankings
Subcategories in which Penn State excelled include: materials engineering, #1; chemistry, #5; mechanical engineering, #3; and industry funding, #2. Penn State tied John Hopkins for the most categories and subcategories ranked in the top 10, with 14. Penn State continues a dramatic climb in computer science, going from 61st in 2002 to 15th in 2003 to 8th in 2004.
